We in San Diego are very fortunate to have two large bays to enjoy all types of water sports. In December, both bays have water sports of a different kind – boat parades.
This year San Diego Bay will host the Parade of Lights on December 9th and 16th. The theme for 2012 is “Our 41st Anniversary, USS Santa Claus.” The parade starts at 5:30PM on both days and runs until approximately 9:00PM. You can find viewing spots all along the bay; Seaport Village being one of the most popular.
My personal favorite is the Fish Market patio. I arrive early, enjoy a glass of wine and some appetizers while I wait and watch the sunset. Then I have a front row seat for all of the parade.
The second parade is the Mission Bay Christmas Boat Parade of Lights. This year the parade will be on Saturday, December 8th. The parade starts at 7:00PM at Quivira Basin. Best viewing is along the west side of Fiesta Island or the east shore of Vacation Village. The parade runs until 9:00PM when it ends with fireworks and tree lighting at Sea World.
Both of these holiday traditions are enjoyed by spectators of all ages and have a true San Diego flair.
